Breaking the Habitus: Queering the Museum by QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA

As part of VIENNA ART WEEK, the QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA invites you to the event “Breaking the Habitus,” which links queer theory and museum work. The event will reflect on how institutional structures and routines can be critically questioned and rethought through collaborative learning, exchange, and alternative forms of knowledge. The plenary session opens up the collective’s “backstage” work and sees itself as an open space for making queer perspectives in art, culture and institutions visible and tangible.

As part of Vienna Art Week 2025 – Learning Systems, the collective of Queer Museum Vienna warmly invites you to participate in Breaking the Habitus, a public conversation and open assembly.

Marking five years of collective work, Breaking the Habitus opens the backstage of the Museum’s practice — sharing testimonies, reflections, and collaborative strategies that have shaped its evolution from a nomadic initiative into a relatively stable institution.

Rather than a formal presentation, the evening unfolds as a convivial assembly: a shared space for dialogue and listening, inviting collaborators, interlocutors, and publics to think together about what it means to “queer the museum” — to make processes of working, learning, and hosting part of its cultural offer.

Join us at the table to exchange experiences, ideas, and stories — or simply to take part in this collective reflection on the making of queer cultural life in Vienna.

The event accompanies the current exhibition ugly things_unlearning beauty, curated by Thomas Trabitsch.

Language: English and German

Admission is free, donations are very welcome.
