Film Screening & Reading
Film Screening by Rosa von Praunheim and Reading by Kenneth Constance Loe as part of the exhibition “Ugly Things_Unlearning Beauty“
Saturday, 13th of December at 18:00, QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA
On the 13th of December we will screen “Nicht der Homosexuelle ist pervers, sondern die Situation in der er lebt” (It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, but the Society in Which He Lives) A film by Rosa von Praunheim from 1971, set in Berlin, that surprisingly did not age badly.
In the final scene of the film, a group of “homosexuals” talk about their experiences as gay men. In front of a pale purple curtain, they discuss joining forces to fight against the oppression of all minorities. Around 50 years later, João Pedro Vale, Nuno Alexandre Ferreira, and their group of friends recreate this tableau vivant in the context of Lisbon. A photographic work is created, which can be seen on the exhibition poster for Ugly Things_Unlearning Beauty. The large-scale group portrait hangs in the administration wing of a former psychiatric hospital and raises the question of who is ultimately perverse – the society, the situation, or the homosexual?
Before the screening, Kenneth Constance Loe whose text-based works appear throughout the exhibition will read from his manuscript. Among them is a poem written specifically for Ugly Things_Unlearning Beauty. Kenneth will speak about beauty ideals, monobrows, pearl necklaces, cruising, and nearly white socks.
During the reading, photos will be taken for our website and social media. Please let us know if you do not want to be in the photos.
