Pride Month is a month full of celebrations and events organised by and for the LGBTIQ community. Often, political resistance takes a back seat in favour of exuberant joy. However, under the famous quote ‘Pride started as a riot’, activists repeatedly point out the political roots of the movement, the ongoing discrimination and the still existing, open demands.

The Minute Museum of the Documentation Centre and Queer Museum looks at evidence of resistant LGBTIQ people in the respective collections and exhibitions of the two institutions, as well as the complex and challenging practice of remembering the history of this otherwise often joyfully loud minority.

The challenges of remembrance work here include the fact that it is always necessary to remember against a majority, that there are only a few cross-generational family traditions, that LGBTIQ people often do not define themselves as a community at all, but rather break down into many communities, including opposing communities, and also that LGBTIQ people can be found on both the perpetrator and victim side of many stories.

At this ‘Minute Museum of Resistance’, Magdalena Bauer (DÖW) and members of the Queer Museum Vienna Collective will come together to discuss a fleeting exhibition of objects from their own collections and their own debates.

In the face of current political tendencies to counter Pride with a heteronormative ‘Stolzmonat’ and to reverse international policies of equality, it is crucial not to allow LGBTIQ holidays to be banned, but at the same time this festive mood also needs a good historical foundation in order to survive in the face of opposition.
