4T – The Trans Body Rights Ar/ctivist Archive

“4T – The Trans Body Rights Ar/ctivist Archive” stands against transphobic backlashes and discrimination, shows different trans realities, the fights for rights and art as activism. With many different voices, multimedia and, in some cases, participatory formats, the exhibiting artists and activists cheerfully present trans/tin perspectives and their right to self-determination. The exhibition “4T” celebrates tin & trans joy, art/activist positions and resistance, which are open to all visitors with joy and solidarity.

trans body – trans rights – trans activism – trans archive – the 4 Ts in the title of this exhibition focus on specific themes in four rooms and show trans culture, life, art and activism from different angles. The title 4T is inspired by the community code “T4T = trans for trans”, which stands for a trans* politics of solidarity. The artistic trans positions in “The Trans Body Rights Ar/ctivist Archive” complement each other, flow into each other, relate to each other, distinguish and separate themselves from each other, observe body boundaries and border locations. They are expanded by the perspectives of non-binary and inter people, as trans, inter and non-binary – in short “tin” – cultures often overlap and connect.

Artists including Rory Midhani, Lia la novia Sirena and Danielle Pamp take us into their visual worlds of trans bodies. An installation by Vinko Nino Jaeger, a sauna with towels stretching across rooms, marks a disputed place for trans* desire and existence, and merges into “activist laundry” hanging on a washing line, which runs through the rooms and also through the participatory timeline presentation on local trans history and activism by Perry Persson Baumgartinger and Frederik Marroquín. The perspectives of 30 tin people create sparks from tin contemporary history as archival practice and join subversive traditions of community archiving such as the AIDS Memorial Quilt, where artistic and archival practices come together. In documentary artistic works, Giegold/Weiß, Jako Wende and Kai*Brust deal with legal cases and the historical persecution of tin people, while Luce DeLire and Fadi Aljabour address the current right to self-determination in Germany and related battles.

The social debate about the recognition of tin people and the questioning of binary gender norms is not only a so-called “tipping point” in the right-wing and conservative scenes, but there are also some transphobic voices in left-wing and progressive circles. After long and hard fights by queer and trans activists for acceptance and rights, trans people are now more visible than ever, but discrimination is still diverse and in many countries around the world, tin people have little to no rights.
