Lecture in German language
with Jako Wende
“I could write so much, but it upsets me because I must not think back—it feels like a dream today. I want so badly to shout my life out to the world and publish it, but that requires money, which I lack; it must surely be unique and interesting, hard to believe—it sounds like a fairy tale, the fact that I endured it all and am still alive is a miracle,” writes Adele Haas on March 28, 1961.
As an inter* person, she was subjected to extreme violence under National Socialism because she did not conform to the constructed norms of so-called “male” or “female.” On November 27, 2024, at 6 p.m., Jako Wende will bring us closer to the life of Adele Haas—researching in numerous archives and reaching out to surviving relatives and neighbors.
In addition to the general state of research on the situation of inter* people under National Socialism, the lecture will also discuss Bella Pree—a persecuted inter* person in Vienna. Both survived numerous concentration camps and were held at the same time in Natzweiler-Struthof.
The aim of the lecture is to let Adele’s life be shouted out to the world. The lecture will be held in German.
Jako Wende
Jako Wende, a non-binary endo trans* person, researches the persecution of trans*, inter*, and/or gender-nonconforming individuals under National Socialism. In the process, Jako continuously uncovers new individuals who have found no place in existing remembrance culture—and sometimes even contacts living relatives.
