Resilient Bodies: Queer Communities and Queer Art in Independent Ukraine
Thursday, 30th of April at 18:30
The talk focuses on queer art created in independent Ukraine, tracing its development from the near absence of openly queer artists in the early years, through more socially engaged and activist practices, to the emergence of a new generation of outspoken voices after Revolution of Dignity in 2014. It also looks at a recent turn toward archival work, as many artists revisit overlooked histories and rethink how queer pasts can be remembered and shared.
Anton Shebetko (he/him) is a Ukrainian artist, photographer, and curator from Kyiv, based in Amsterdam. His work explores queer histories in Ukraine, focusing on memory, identity, and the role of archives and photography in making these stories visible. He recently curated together with Maria Vtorushyna a group show “A Heart That Beats: Focus on Queer Ukrainian Art” at Schwules Museum in Berlin. He has exhibited internationally, including at FOAM (Amsterdam), Zamek Ujazdowski (Warsaw), PinchukArtCentre (Kyiv) and Photo Elysée (Lausanne), and has given talks at institutions such as Moderna Museet and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
