Art of Community – QMV @ TangenteSt.Pölten
28.6.2024 – 7.7.2024
Open Call: 48 scholarships to be granted for four laboratories from June 28 to July 7, 2024 in St. Pölten, Austria as part of TangenteSt.Pölten.
Deadline May 12, 2024.
“Art of Community” is the summer school camping of TangenteSt.Pölten – Festival for Contemporary Culture and is directed at young professionals from the fields of art, curation, outreach, activism and social work who are interested in community work and/or already work in this field.
At the heart of “Art of Community” are four laboratories with experts who provide in-depth insights into various community and art projects and open up spaces for practical and theoretical experimentation. Here, answers are sought to questions of representation, affectedness and agency. In addition, skill-sharing opportunities will be created and talks and discussions will be held with local and international experts.
The 4 labs:
1. “I want to be part of a queer movement” with Queer Museum Vienna
2. “How do I become a Migrantpolitan?” with Larry Macaulay, Anas Aboura, Nadine Jensen from Migrantpolitan
3. “future flowing – dreaming dreams” with Karin Cheng, Ozan Zakariya Keskinkılıç, Anna Schapiro
4. “Transnational stories: A journey through Romani realities” with Simonida Selimović and Hamze Bytyçi
What makes a community? How do we connect with others? Who is welcome or never invited? How do we create sustainable structures for multi-perspective community work?
“Art of Community” aims to strengthen transnational networks that stand up against hateful policies and spread practices of solidarity and against loneliness and isolation. This is precisely why the summer school offers 48 scholarship holders a place where they can meet, learn from each other, inspire each other and, of course, cook and eat together.
Each scholarship includes:
- Participation in a lab and skills-sharing sessions
- Panel discussions
- Discounted or free visits to performances
- Accommodation – campsite plus sanitary facilities (shower, toilets)
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner (vegetarian and/or vegan)
- Community events
The cost contribution per day is € 15,-/person
Travel costs must be covered by the participants themselves. Unfortunately, camping equipment cannot be provided and must be brought along.
Camping and working will take place on a green area of the former Glanzstoff factory, in the garden of the so-called Directors’ Villa.
Information on accessibility: The area is not completely barrier-free. Please contact the TangenteSt.Pölten team (call@tangente-st-poelten.at) so that they can make your stay possible.

The laboratory of Queer Museum Vienna:
“I want to be part of a queer movement.”
Solidarity networks with the example of queer organizations and initiatives in Vienna
Competition and greed for profit are neoliberal concepts that cannot be applied in community work, what values and methods are used instead? The program is aimed at people who ask themselves this question or have answers to it and who are or want to become part of a queer network in various forms. Together we will try to draw a map of Vienna’s queer networks and their international connections using concrete examples and experiences from invited experts. The aim is to make visible the great diversity of fields of action that result from the orientation towards social needs: social areas such as shared housing and ageing, youth work, cultural diversity, scientific discourse, archives and educational work, health care and self-care, legal advice and activism, artistic approaches and visibility, leisure and entertainment, club culture and much more. Each day of the “summer school” we will focus on a different field of the network and try to discover untapped potential and create synergies between the areas. We also want to incorporate the special features of the host city of St. Pölten and its proximity to Vienna. In addition to the informative inputs, exercises will also be offered to make the group dynamics enjoyable for all participants.
The Queer Museum Vienna has been contributing to Vienna’s cultural landscape since 2020 and creates visibility for queer topics and art. In addition to exhibitions, it also offers a variety of events and cooperates with various projects and institutions. Wilhelm Binder will represent the QMV collective for the laboratory. WB has already gained a lot of experience in self-organized and non-hierarchical projects and structures. WB is working closely with the QMV collective and Cla Gallistl from “Community Building Austria” to develop the program.
