Beauty, Trash, and Dirt: 40 Years of Art at The Gay Museum Berlin

What is gay art? When is it just gay, and when is it also art? What counts as camp, what as kitsch, what is trash, and what is transgressive? And who actually decides what belongs in the canon and what can be discarded?

Thursday, 15th of January at 18:00

What is gay art? When is it just gay, and when is it also art? What counts as camp, what as kitsch, what is trash, and what is transgressive? And who actually decides what belongs in the canon and what can be discarded?

In search of answers to these questions, Dr. Birgit Bosold (she/her) devotes her lecture to the exhibition practice of the Schwules Museum Berlin (SMU), which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Dr. Birgit Bosold (she/her) has been a member of the board of the Gay Museum Berlin (SMU) since 2006 (the first female member). With her focus on strategy, programming, finance, fundraising, and curation, she has contributed significantly to the dynamic development of the SMU over the past 15 years and has (co-)curated numerous exhibitions, including “Lesbian Vision” (2018) with works by 30 artists from six generations, and most recently the three-part exhibition series “Lesbian Legacies” at Kunstraum Scherben Berlin, which offers a fascinating insight into art history and celebrates lesbian artists as artistic and social avant-garde. Since 2021, she has also been a board member of the Stiftung Schwules Museum, which was established with funds from large inheritances and is dedicated to promoting queer art and culture.
