In this edition of the art history lecture series “What’s Missing?”, Anjelika Spöth discusses clothing as a system of signs that determines how bodies are read, evaluated, and regulated and how these historical constructs continue to have an impact today. Clothing served as a form of social identification by making gender, age, and social and religious affiliations visible.

Anjelika Spöth is an art historian and, together with her daughter Karina Chernenko, co-founder of KUNST + kaviar, a platform for critical, inclusive, and feminist art education. Both art historians challenge traditional narratives, make marginalized perspectives visible, and demonstrate the connections between art, power, the body, and history. They were awarded the City of Kassel Culture Prize for their work.
