Accessibility at Queer Museum Vienna

Accessibility at Queer Museum Vienna

Queer Museum Vienna is a place for everyone. We want all our visitors — regardless of disability, age, or lived experience — to be able to take part in what we do, on their own terms.

We follow the social model of accessibility: we believe people are primarily excluded not by their disability, but by spaces and processes that were not designed with them in mind. Our job is to adapt the museum to the person, not the other way around. Disability is also not always visible, and we try to keep that in mind in everything we offer.

Getting in touch

If you have any access needs — for yourself or for a group — please write to us (team@queermuseumvienna.com) in advance so we can prepare and make your visit as smooth as possible.

We’re happy to arrange:

  • an individual visit adapted to your needs
  • a guided tour for visitors with disabilities
  • a group visit (for schools, organisations, or community groups)

Just let us know what would help — the more advance notice you can give us, the better we can prepare.

What we offer

Step-free entrance

The accessible entrance with a ramp is located on the side of the building. A bell is available there to call a staff member for extra assistance.

Staff assistance

Our team is on hand throughout your visit. If you’re not sure whether you need help, just ask — we’d rather check in than assume.

Easy-to-read texts

Curatorial texts are available in an Easy-to-Read format, designed to be easier to follow for visitors with neurodivergence, older visitors, children, and anyone who finds dense text hard to process. Look for the QR codes in the exhibition spaces to access these on your phone.

Sensory bag

For visitors who may experience sensory overload, we offer a sensory bag with a soft blanket, a foam sitting mat, a fidget toy, and noise-cancelling headphones. Available at the information desk, or on request for events.

Seating Folding chairs are available throughout the museum on request.

Wheelchair

A wheelchair is available for visitors on request.

Guide dogs welcome

Guide dogs are welcome at the museum. A bowl and water are provided on request.

Accessible events

Our public programme aims to be accessible too — including where possible, adapted formats for different audiences.

Restrooms

Please note: Queer Museum Vienna does not currently have an accessible toilet on site and is not able to change the restrooms of Otto Wagner Areal. We’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. If you let us know in advance, our staff can point you to the nearest accessible toilet on the Otto Wagner Areal.

A note on language

We try to use respectful, up-to-date language when talking about disability — and we’re always open to feedback if we get it wrong. If something on this page could be improved, please write to us at the address above.
